Stephen Merchant Possibly Creating An Office Spin-off

Stephen Merchant has been in talks about working on a spinoff for the US version of The Office.

The BBC original, which Merchant co-wrote with Ricky Gervais, was remade and adapted for the US under the supervision of Greg Daniels. An offshoot of the US version has long been expected, with one project set to be a spin-off starring Amy Poehler evolving into it's own separate sitcom with no links to The Office.

Executive producer and show runner Daniels has said that a direct spinoff could be revived with help from Merchant.

"It's not possible, physically, for me to be involved in it right this second, but I'm talking to people over at The Office about another idea, and Stephen Merchant came back and directed an episode of The Office so were were talking about the idea,"

"It's possible that some combination of other Office people could produce it without my giving blood for it."

Meanwhile the US Office has been renewed for the 2009-2010 season as well as the brilliant 30 Rock which NBC also green lit for another season.

Terry Gilliam Back Working On Don Quixote

In a chat with Empire, Terry Gilliam confirmed that he is back working on a new script for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, you just can't keep a good film down. He has this to say about the writing process this time:

“Tony (writing partner Tony Grisoni) and I have started rewriting Don Quixote just this last week. [We] finally got the script back. I re-read the greatest script ever written and realise we gotta get rewriting! I really wanna knock that one out in the next month or so.”

Gilliam was vaguer on details, saying only that he had “some very different ideas” for the movie, but he has not lost any of his enthusiasm for the lance-wielding Spaniard. “[I’m] starting to think I was lucky, because maybe the film will be better seven years later. It will have matured a bit longer.”
Johnny Depp is set to reprise his role as a 21st century marketing executive transported back in time.

Jim Sheridan To Direct Boston Mob Movie

Irish director Jim Sheridan has started working on a film about Boston mobster and FBI informant Whitey Bulger.

The 'In The Name Of The Father' director's latest project is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob, which was penned by Boston Globe journalists Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill.

Black Mass told the story of Bulger's rise as he took over the Winter Hill Gang, which organised gun trafficking for the IRA and drug running.

It also revealed Bulger's childhood friendship with FBI agent John Connolly, who used him as an informant until he disappeared controversially in 1995.

Miramax originally acquired the rights for the book with the intention of using Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the film. However, their rights have now expired and Sheridan is penning his own script for the movie.

Mitch Hurwitz On Arrested Development

Its no secret that we at Flicks News are massive fans of Arrested Development and eagerly await to see the film, IGN where lucky enough to catch up with the shows creator Mitch Hurwitz to ask him about the film and will Michael Cera return as George Michael? Here's what the article had to say:

Regarding an Arrested movie, Hurwitz said, "We have a deal with Fox Searchlight," before adding, "We have a story – which is Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs." Hurwitz said they were currently working on locking in the cast and remarked, "I'm really optimistic. We're getting close."

After the panel, I was one of a smaller group of journalists who spoke to Hurwitz, and we asked him the status of securing Michael Cera for the film, who has been more reluctant than others to commit to returning to play his character in the Arrested Development movie. Said Hurwitz of Cera potentially returning, "I hope so. I hope so. It's a big priority."

Asked if he had a way to rework the story, should Cera not come back, Hurwitz replied, "Well, I haven't written the story, truthfully. The Valkyrie thing was truly just a ruse!" Hurwitz explained that when it came to writing the script, "I do want to wait until I know who's in it, because it won't be like a big paying job, this movie. So it's not something I want to do on spec. I kind of want to know that we're making this. We're working on it."

Hurwitz added, "I will say about Michael Cera – he is a very, very smart guy. He's a very thoughtful guy. I remember when we were casting for Arrested, the TV show, and I'd seen him in a pilot years earlier, so I set out to get him. He was only 14 at the time. I Said, 'Let's get that kid. I think his name is Michael Cera. I think he lives in Canada.' I'm waiting and waiting to hear back, and after about three weeks I hear, 'Michael Cera responded to the script.' And I felt like, 'I didn't realize that was a step,' you know? But it gave me big respect for him, because it was like, you're not just some whore. You want to read the script, you want to understand the character. This is a young boy! So he's making smart decisions for himself… but I hope this will be one of them!"

Kieran Culkin Joins Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

HitFix reports that Kieran Culkin has been cast as Wallace Wells in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular series of "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels, the movie finds the title character (played by Michael Cera) having to defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart.

Wells is Pilgrim's gay roommate (they share a bed even though Pilgrim is heterosexual). Unlike Pilgrim though, Wells is considered the more responsible of the duo and also know for his pithy observations.

ComingSoon.net got to meet up with Andy Serkis to have a little sit down and chat about his upcomming projects Tin Tin & The Hobbit:

"We are starting 'Tintin' the week after next," Serkis said. "Peter Jackson is producing and Steven Spielberg is directing. I remember reading them as a child. I wasn't this massive fan. I loved the almost storyboard nature of the beautiful, beautiful drawings. And the way its going to be done... It's obviously performance capture so it's is going to be perfect. There isn't a more perfect way of doing it."

"met Guillermo prior to him actually being attached. It was all very much going to happen so we met at an awards and sort of giggling at the fact we were going to be working together actually. I am going to really be looking forward to it. I mean the combination between he and Peter is extraordinary as well. I know they are writing at the moment. But other than that, I really have no idea. Peter is producing. Same writing team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens is writing with Guillermo."

Fox, Warners Close To 'Watchmen' Agreement

20th Century Fox and Warner Bros are allegedly "close" to making a deal that will allow Watchmen into cinemas on March 6.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two parties have held behind closed doors meetings the last few days to iron out the legal problems that have threatened the films release.

Judge Gary Allen Feess last month ruled that Fox still owns interest in the movie and has the right to distribute the first feature film based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's graphic novel. A January 20 hearing date had been set in order to decide if an injunction is needed to block the film's theatrical rollout.

However, Warner Bros has declined to press its request to bring forward the hearing and the recent talks suggest that the two studios are near to a financial settlement.

Intrestingly The Fox Television Network aired Watchmen TV spots during its season premiere of 24 over the weekend.

Kristen Schaal’s Series Penelope: Princess Of Pets Being Made For Channel 4

Kristen Schaal’s web series Penelope: Princess Of Pets could be made into a pilot for Channel 4.

She and double-act partner Kurt Braunohler made five episodes of the offbeat show for now-defunct website Super Deluxe.

And now Schaal, who plays obsessed fan Mel in the Flight Of The Conchords, says it ‘looks like’ they will be developing the offbeat show for Channel 4.

‘This year, it’s going to be me trying to figure out how to make a pilot in London.’

But the New-York based comic says she has no plans to move across the Atlantic: ‘I can’t afford it there, the flats are so expensive. I’d be living on the street, so no, I’ll just go over there for a few weeks to do it.

‘It’s all a little bit hazy, but that’s what I see myself doing.’

Penelope Princess of Pets Episode 5

She also revealed some information on the upcoming season of Flight of the Conchords and what we can expect to see:
"I think, definitely more of the same things that people love, like the guys are going to be prophetic in some ways, and enduring in most. They’ll be working for love and fame. All the characters come back, and there’s music, which makes it an unusual TV show.

I think that they’ve got more money this year: I’ve read the scripts and I’ve only gotten to see a few things that are on it, and some of the music videos they’ve cut were gorgeous. It’s exciting, because it seems like every creative whim that the guys had this year got to be played out. It’s very surreal, too: it’s a surreal season, in my opinion, in all the best ways."

Possible Only Fool's & Horses Prequel In The Pipeline

The BBC is in talks about making a possible prequel to Only Fools And Horses according to the Independent on Sunday.

Series creator John Sullivan has written a script for a sitcom about a teenage Del Boy growing up in Sixties Peckham.

He first had the idea in 1997, and in six years ago the BBC announced that the show had been commissioned, calling for young actors who wanted to play Del Boy to come forward.

But nothing ever came it, and instead the BBC made the The Green Green Grass, the not very good spin-off featuring Boycie and Marlene living in the countryside.

However, the plans for the prequel seems to be back on the table.

‘I'm having a lot of fun writing it because it's set in the same period as when I was growing up,’ Sullivan told the paper.

‘Joanie [the Trotters’ mother] will be a key character, and during the film will give birth to Rodney. We'll also see Grandad as a much younger man.’

He has previously said that the pilot episode would see Del Boy bunking off school, becoming a mod and flogging dodgy gear to his mates Boycie, Denzil and Trigger.

A spokeswoman for Sullivan's production company Shazam said the sitcom was one of several projects the BBC was discussing with the writer.

Sienna Miller Leaves 'Nottingham'

According to digitalspy.co.uk from an article in the New York Times, Sienna Miller has quit Nottingham in which she was to play Maid Marian, rumors have it that she did not get on with co-star Russell Crowe. An insider supposedly says there is trouble on the set saying:

"Russell Crowe is ‘telling producers to get a new director, demanding script rewrites and, now, forcing Sienna Miller out of the flick’."

"Originally the movie was about a love triangle between Maid Marian, Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. It is now all about Russell's Robin Hood," said the mole.

"Literally, 40 pages of script were redone and now are just devoted to him and his massive ego. It's amazing."

Crowe has been cast as both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham in the film, which will start shooting in March.
