Jonathan Nolan Speaks About The Dark Knight Oscar Snub

Jonathan Nolan contacted darkcampaign.com about the Oscar snub of The Dark Knight here's what he told the site:
hey — not sure who to address this to as it looks like a collective effort, but I just wanted to pass along my thanks.
It’s truly humbling that you guys would take the time and effort to try to get the film recognized. I, like you, was disappointed that Chris didn’t get some recognition this morning, but for Heath and so many of the people who worked so hard on this thing to get nominated is thrilling.
Any nominations for a comic book movie is a thing of beauty no matter how you slice it, and that takes the sting out a bit. Besides, I’ve been to the big show before, and, like any of these things, it’s a little disappointing. Did you know it’s not even an open bar once the show starts? At least this time I would have remembered to bring a little cash so I could buy myself a drink after losing.
The best part of this experience is seeing other people getting passionate about the film the way that we did. It has been a truly incredible experience. So thank you again.
best,
jonah nolan

BOOM Studios Talks Pixar Disney Comics
CBR got to sit down and chat with Editor of the Pixar titles Paul Morrissey about BOOM! Studios upcoming Pixar/Disney Comics that are to be released in March beginning with Mark Waids “The Incredibles: Family Matters.”
Other titles in BOOM!’s Pixar line include “Cars: The Rookie” by Alan J. Porter and Albert Carreres ; "Toy Story: The Mysterious Stranger,” written by Dan Jolley with art by Chris Moreno; “Monsters, Inc.” from writer Paul Benjamin. From the Disney side of id “The Muppet Show,” written and illustrated by Roger Langridge. Well heres what Paul Morrissey has to say about the upcomming titles and what fans can expect:
CBR: Paul, tell us about the stories BOOM! will be telling in the first Disney/Pixar books.
Paul Morrisey: Our first three titles come out in March. In “The Incredibles: Family Matters,” Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) really learns what it means to be a family leader. Along the way, we meet a really cool villain named Futurion, and the Parr's get some new neighbors. Hmmm... That's all I'm allowed to say right now! Trust me, though—there's plenty of laughs and action. And if you're really nice, maybe Frozone will make an appearance, too!
The incomparable Roger Langridge brings his surreal brand of humor to “The Muppet Show”—and it's a match made in heaven! Longing for the swamp, Kermit forlornly plucks his banjo, while the gang tries to jolly him out of his funk. Packed full of madcap skits and gags, “The Muppet Show” is sure to please old and new fans alike. Issue #3, by the way, features a great Gonzo story, which is going to be a classic!
“Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters, Inc.” “WALL*E,” “Muppet Robin Hood” and “Muppet Peter Pan” are just some of the titles that will soon follow!
What are the challenges you face in bringing the tremendously popular Pixar properties to the comics page? How does BOOM! insure the tone and message of the films translates?
You're right. It is a huge challenge bringing these Pixar properties to life on the comic book page. Audiences already know and love these characters, and they certainly expect the tone of our comics to be similar to that of the movies. So, there's a lot pressure to execute each title flawlessly. In order to do that, I've done my best to work with writers and artists who are passionate about the characters and stories they are telling.
Mark Waid on “The Incredibles: Family Matters” is a great example. Who can write a mix of action, comedy, drama and super-heroics better than Mark Waid? He was born to write this comic! And I have a pretty good hunch that the Pixar staff is full of Mark Waid fans, especially the team that worked on “The Incredibles.” By the way, Waid and artist Marcio Takara knocked the first issue of the park! It really looks like a 2D cell-animated Incredibles movie, no small thanks to the amazing colors supplied by Andrew Dalhouse.
We're also getting a huge assist from Disney and Pixar. They go over every story pitch, making sure that each concept meets their high standards. I feel like I have a safety net working with them. If we push the envelope too far, they always reel us in and keep us on the right track. They also sign off on all the artists we work with, so the look of each Pixar comic will have their seal of approval.
The Pixar films are certainly all-ages in nature. Are these BOOM! books also considered all-ages? When working with the writers of these series, how do you help them craft stories that will appeal to both a 12-year-old and a 45-year-old, as the movies do?
Yes, these books are absolutely all-ages. We want to make comics for kids again! In order to do that, I've tried to hire experienced writers that have written for both kids and adults. For instance, Dan Jolley is writing our first “Toy Story” arc. Not only was Dan nominated for an Eisner Award for his “JSA: The Unholy Three,” but he has recently written children's comic book stories based on “Warriors,” the novel series by Erin Hunter. Likewise, Paul Benjamin, who's writing our first “Monsters, Inc.” arc, has recently written a 12-issue run on “Marvel Adventures Hulk.” And Roger Langridge, who's writing and drawing our “The Muppet Show” comic, has a huge artistic palette to paint from, from “Fred the Clown” to Marvel's “Fin Fang Foom” So, hopefully, I don't have to help them too much!
As is true with any licensed comic, changes are made at the request of the licensor. What sort of changes have Disney asked for? Has their focus been more on the story or the visual representation of their characters?
Working with Disney and Pixar has been a very collaborative and rewarding experience, but they have final say. They are the guardians of these properties, and we take their suggestions with very open ears. They are very story focused, and we have really put our story pitches through the wringer, making sure that each plot point and story beat is approved by them.
Surprisingly, they have been very open to artistic stylization. They actually love seeing their characters depicted in new ways—just as long as we capture their essence and heart. So far, the changes have been minimal. If we get a certain characterization wrong, they'll flag it. If a color scheme is off, they'll let us know. Hopefully, we've done most of the heavy lifting at the story pitch stage. I'm sure they'll tweak some dialog here and there once the pages get lettered
While it's always hard to play favorites, we’ve got to ask -- do you have a favorite Disney book yet?
Oh, gosh! You're putting me on the spot! Each project is really fun and unique in its own way! Since everyone is expecting me to say “The Incredibles” (which is amazing), I'm going to throw them a curve ball and say “The Muppet Show.” As a kid, I loved “The Muppet Show.” I watched it religiously. And Roger Langridge is really channeling the madcap, subversive spirit of the show! So, that has a particular soft spot in my heart.
Which of these projects have surprised you the most, and how?
Of all the projects so far, “Cars” has been the most challenging to pull off. Alan J. Porter pitched me a story chronicling Lightning McQueen's origin, and Pixar loved it. That actually surprised me quite a bit. So, we get to play with some fun back-story. It's very difficult to make the comic book as dynamic and as full of kinetic movement as the film, but I think we've succeeded. My hat goes off to artist Albert Carreres, who has to draw entire comics full of nothing but cars. Not an easy feat!
Can you tell us how BOOM! plans to reach audiences outside the direct market?
I can't go into too much detail here. Needless to say, we are very committed to selling these books in the mass market. They have such broad appeal. Sure, “The Incredibles” will do extremely well in the direct market, but I think titles like “Finding Nemo” and “Monsters, Inc.” will really perfom in the mass market.
Paramount Lapses On Torso/Ness Rights
THR has news that Paramount has let the film rights lapse for Torso/Ness, the graphic novel adaptation that has had David Fincher ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', which received a whooping 13 Oscar nods) attached to direct and Matt Damon to star, leaving the project in limbo.
The article stated last month, Paramount's ability to extend the rights option as part of the original deal expired, which would have then required the studio to purchase the rights outright to retain them -- a price the studio apparently was unwilling to shell out. While the studio still owns Kruger's screenplay, it is in discussions potentially to strike a new option agreement with the comics writers, to whom the rights reverted. (Fincher and the producers remain attached.)
Maybe success at the Oscars will get Paramount more willing to part with their cash.
Check This...'A Grand Day Out '
Nick Park started making A Grand Day Out in 1982, the film took over six years to make, almost all of it single-handedly done by Nick Park himself. It formed part of his graduation project from the National Film and Television School, Aardman Animations took him on before he finished the piece, allowing him to work on it part time while still being funded by the school. Peter Sallis was paid £50 for his services to voice Wallace and had long forgotten the project when Nick Park got in touch to let him know it had been completed.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film, but lost to the short Creature Comforts, which was also a creation of Nick Park.
The plot is basically Wallace and Gromit have run out of cheese and this provides an excellent excuse for the duo to take their holiday on the moon, where, as everyone knows, there is ample cheese.
The short and the continued success of Wallace and Gromit is testament of the quality, time, dedication and just sheer genius that goes into each project Nick Park is involved in.

81st Annual Academy Awards Nominations
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has emerged as the front runner for this year's Oscars with 13 nominations.
Slumdog Millionaire, from Danny Boyle, was close behind with 10 nominations, including best film.
Dark Knight and Milk received eight nominations, with the late Heath Ledger receiving a best supporting actor nod.
Meryl Streep received her 15th nomination for her role in the film Doubt, alongside Kate Winslet for best actress in Stephen Daldry's The Reader.
Martin McDonagh got a nomination for In Bruges for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
Notable absences has to be lack of nominations for The Wrestler and The Dark Knight in any of the major categories outside of the acting and technical fields respectively. Benicio Del Toro for Che and Clint Eastwood for Gran Torino are also notable absences in the Best Actor field. Bruce Springsteen's song The Wrestler and Clint Eastwood and Jamie Cullum's song Gran Torino not being nominated for best song has to be a mistake.

Michael Cera Finally Speaks About Arrested Development
MTV finally got to ask Michael Cera about weather or not he is returning to play George Michael, here's what he had to say:
“There’s no script or anything, so the movie I think is more hypothetical than people think,” said Cera. He also joked, “I’d possibly play the part. I’d possibly put the script in my shredder…I’m enjoying being the villain."So there you have it I am sure in the video on MTV he is merely joking about being a villain but living outside of the USA I will never know but its good to know that he is just waiting on a script to see before confirming anything.

Judd Apatow Slasher Movie?
Bill Hader hinted to Devin Faraci of CHUD, that he and Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich have written a slasher movie for Judd Apatow.
What would an Apatow-produced slasher film from Rich and Hader be like? Says Bill: 'It's partially Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad.' It's hard to argue against that.
'I don't know if it's even going to get made,' Hader told me. 'Judd met with us and said "I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie."'
The film will be a horror comedy, and while Hader danced around giving away too much, he did describe it to me like this: 'It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture - this sounds really hoity toity - you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That's basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house? What would you and your dipshit friends do about it?'

Ian Dury Biopic In Works
Andy Serkis is working on a biopic about music legend Ian Dury.
Serkis told Cinema Blend that he begins shooting the project about the punk singer in April.
"I'm actually doing a film about the life of Ian Dury, who's a proto-punk rocker in the 1970s"Ian Dury 'Spasticus Autisticus' Banned By BBC
"He's an amazing character, a real poet."
"He sort of came up out of the British pub rock scene. He sort of pre-empted the Sex Pistols and the whole punk movement. And he was a polio sufferer, so he basically didn't have much use of his left leg or his left arm. He was one of the first disabled punk rockers ever. I'm really looking forward to that."

Tarantino Talks Kill Bill Redux AKA The Whole Bloody Affair
Quentin Tarantino was grilled by The Quentin Tarantino Archives about Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair:
I started asking some long nagging questions. I felt as the ambassador of the fan community, I should ask what is going on with that long-overdue “integral” edition of Kill Bill, be it theatrically or on DVD. Let me take that back, actually I asked where that Kill Bill script on paperback was and Quentin assured me that it will come out in a longer version, he’s just been putting the whole movie aside for a while. As you might know, the integral version of Kill Bill that was shown once in Cannes, is no longer what you’ll eventually see, at least not completely.Tarantino also listed two top 20 lists of his favourite genres Spaghetti Western and Grindhouse Movies:“We’ve actually added some things to it. We did a whole little chapter that I wrote and designed for the animated sequence, that we never did, because we figured, back when it was gonna be one big movie, it was going to be too long, so we didn’t do it. So when we were talking about re-releasing it, they asked is there anything you can put in, and I said no I put everything in there, but… there’s one sequence that we wouldn’t even have to shoot! So we got together with Production IG and did it, and it’s really cool. So it’s this little seven minute sequence, it’s really cool, it’s in the O-Ren chapter.” - Quentin TarantinoThe version in Cannes was the way it will be, recut to be one movie, with an intermission, as supposed to two seperate ones with the cliffhanger and the tags. “It’s more like a big 60s movie with the intermission. Oh, you’ll just have to see it!” he laughs. Of course DVD release plans and all that stuff on the business end is potentially outside the influence of a director, but knowing that it’s on the way is definitely better than speculating. The Quentin Tarantino Archives will keep you posted on the development. We’ve seen conceptual artwork of the DVD case a year ago at the ComiCon, we know what Quentin has to say about it, so with some more patience we’ll have this WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR in our hands at some point. Stay tuned for more...

Brandon Routh Joins Scott Pilgrim Cast
Brandon Routh and Brie Larson have joined the cast of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," Edgar Wright's adaptation of the cult favorite Oni Press graphic novels for Universal.
"Pilgrim" centers on young slacker Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), who meets the woman of his dreams (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) but finds he can win her heart only by battling and defeating her seven evil ex-boyfriends.
The books, by Bryan Lee O'Malley, feature romance, teen angst and plenty of fantastical action involving a large supporting cast. The fifth installment of the book series will be published in February.
On a side note Routh also interestingly teamed up wth Tobey Maguire in the US recently for Barack Obama's call to community action on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Click here for the details.
'Lord Of The Rings' Halflings To Return For 'The Hobbit'
Dominic Monaghan has revealed that producers of The Hobbit want him and his fellow halflings to return for the Lord Of The Rings prequels.
The actor told MTV that although his character Merry and friends such as Pippin are not in JRR Tolkien's book, bosses want to thank loyal fans by bringing them back.
"They really want us to come back, and I think there's a really strong chance that we might be back.
"We're not in The Hobbit, no, but I think the idea in [the producers'] heads is that the trilogy of the Lord Of The Rings films was so beloved by the fans that they're really keen to try to say thank you for the support that they gave to the Lord Of The Rings movies and possibly bring back some of those characters that they know and love."
Filming of the The Hobbit is expected to get underway in New Zealand in the coming months.

Joaquin Phoenix Rapping

Joaquin Phoenix has made his rap debut at a Las Vegas club over the weekend.
The actor performed three songs from his new LP to a small crowd, as his brother in law Casey Affleck and a camera crew documented it.
Phoenix addressed the crowd before he began performance and said:
"Are there people out there who think I'm a joke? I'm sure there will be. Are there people who think it's going to suck? Probably, but I can't worry about that.
"This is me saying this is who I am. This is my story. After all the years of reading scripts and reading lines, this is my chance to do something straight from the heart and put it out there."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine In Extensive Reshoots

Reshoots is never really good news in Hollywood terminology so its a bit worrying for X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Collider reports that Fox is conducting extensive re-shoots for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", some or all of those re-shoots in Vancouver. But unlike most re shoots where the studio take control of the direction of the film these re shoots are giving director Gavin Hood more control to make the film he wanted to make.
Hugh Jackman sent AICN an email confirming the re-shoots are happening, and promising WOLVERINE will be badass :
Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ
Hey everyone -
It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!
I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!
In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize...
Cheers,
Hugh
