Frank Millers 'Buck Rogers' Is Dead Due To 'The Spirit'

Variety reports that Odd Lot Entertainment has now dropped Frank Miller adaptation of 'Buck Rogers' due to the under performance of 'The Spirit.' Also Deborah Del Prete has resigned her post as top of the company after 23 years.

Sources said that the proximity of Del Prete's exit to the underperformance of the Frank Miller-directed "The Spirit" was not coincidental, but Pritzker denied it was the sole reason. Odd Lot co-financed that film, and estimates are that Pritzker lost tens of millions of dollars. She and Del Prete also moved off an early plan to re-team with Miller on a new version of "Buck Rogers."

While that kind of exposure is the downside of the current emergence of high net-worth individuals as film financiers, Pritzker denied her exposure was anywhere near that or that the episode dampened her resolve or her enthusiasm for finding another film with Miller.

"Frank was a fantastic partner, and while everybody was disappointed the film didn't perform better, it wasn't the end of the world," Pritzker said. "You always try to mitigate risk, but this is a very mercurial business and you take a swing and sometimes you don't hit it. At the end of the day, we'll be OK. Certainly, when things don't go as planned, it presents an opportunity for people to step back and think about where you are going. Deborah and I have been together for 23 years, and we've been fortunate enough to enjoy many triumphs, but we had the desire to go in different directions. We are friends as well as partners and we will continue to do projects together."

Terry Gilliam's Next Is 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'

Variety confirms that Terry Gilliam is teaming up with Brit producer Jeremy Thomas to bring his long-cherished and troubled project 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote' to the bigscreen. Thomas' Recorded Picture Co. will produce after successfully obtaining the rights following lengthy negotiations, Hanway Films will handle international sales.

Gilliam and screenwriter Tony Grisoni, who also wrote the first version, have rewritten and updated the script. The new film will revolve around a filmmaker who is charmed into joining Don Quixote's eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.

"I'm not so much a filmmaker as someone who gets possessed by an idea and it doesn't leave me until I make the film," Gilliam told Variety. "I commit myself to it so fully."
Gilliam is also in talks with Johnny Depp, who had been set to star in the first ill-fated attempt as a modern-day ad exec who travels back in time and is mistaken for Sancho Panza by Don Quixote. Scheduling concerns are seen as the biggest obstacle to Depp's participation this time.

Gilliam is hoping to start shooting "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" next spring. The main role of Don Quixote has yet to be cast.

Could Part Of 'Spider-Man 4' Be Shot In Ireland?

The Dundalk Democrat and MTV are reporting a small portion of Spider-man 4 could be shot in Dundalk.

Dundalk came into Raimi's way of thinking when the New York Times profiled Dundalk's Sustainable Energy Zone in one of its issues back in April 2008, a story which was featured also in the Dundalk Democrat at the time.

In the New York Times article, DkIT's 60m high wind turbine was featured, something that caught Raimi's eye. Now after getting in touch with Dundalk film director John Moore, Raimi has his sights set on bringing a small part of the production to Dundalk.

A Marvel spokesperson, ???? Ms Aprile Fulday ???? said: "We are delighted to be bringing one of our most celebrated comic and screen icons, Spiderman, to Dundalk, Ireland.

'Star Trek' Writers Talk Sequel

MTV caught up with Star Trek screen writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and the witers discussed how the Star Trek mythos will continue in the alternate world the film series now resides.

"One of the obstacles that we found ourselves butting up against [when we took on the job] was this idea that we already knew the fate of the characters," writer/producer Alex Kurtzman told us of the newly established parallel "Trek" dimension, forever altered by the reckless actions of time-travelling villain Nero (Eric Bana). "If you're going to bring a whole new iteration of 'Trek' to life, you could never put them in any real danger — because you already know how they either died or lived. So, we felt like, all right, we have to find a way to make the future unpredictable, so whenever they're in these difficult, treacherous situations there truly is the risk of death."

Word already leaked more than a month ago that at least one "Trek" sequel is in the works, and the series' gatekeepers confirmed to us that such memorable characters as Khan Noonien Singh and Dr. Tolian Soran are among the many characters whose life courses may have been altered by the events of the new film.

"All the characters who existed in the universe or canon we grew up with are essentially still around in some capacity," Kurtzman explained. "But their lives have been altered, so they may again intersect with our crew."

"There's a deal in place with the writers and the actors," Abrams said recently of "Trek" sequel plans, explaining that all the key actors are under contract to return. "If people like this movie, and there's a demand for another one, we would be happy to work on it."

Well, they certainly did — and Kurtzman and his writing partner Roberto Orci (who also collaborated on the upcoming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen") told us that their minds are already swimming with sequel possibilities.

"I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again," Orci explained, saying that Leonard Nimoy and other "original universe" cast members will likely be unnecessary from here on out. "In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."

"Now we're in this new world," Kurtzman agreed. "And we're just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future."

As for ideas in that universe, Orci explained: "We've had a couple of really preliminary conversations, but we really didn't want to [get ahead of ourselves], because this isn't something we invented. We wanted to see what fans think of the first one; let's see what works, and what people think is the best in what we've done. And then we can take that into account when we think about the next movie."

Asked how soon they'd start writing the "Trek" sequel if the first one is announced as a hit the Monday after opening weekend, Orci said: "That day."

"I'm already going back and reading some of the books I've missed," he said of "Trek" tales and fan-fiction that have been written in past years, which could be reinterpreted for their new universe. "I'm trying to read every 'Star Trek' book I can get my hands on. We did that a lot for the first movie. ... I'm starting to re-immerse myself again in what's come before."

Martin Scorsese To Direct 'Sinatra'

Universal Pictures has acquired the feature film project Sinatra from Mandalay Pictures for Martin Scorsese to direct.

Screenwriter (Field of Dreams) Phil Alden Robinson is writing the screenplay for Sinatra based on the life of the iconic entertainer. Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures have been developing the project, after securing the Frank Sinatra life rights and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE) - a joint venture of the Sinatra Estate and Warner Music Group.

"We have dreamt of making a movie about Frank Sinatra, and Marty Scorsese is undeniably the perfect vision keeper for this project," said Chairman of Mandalay Entertainment Group, Peter Guber. President of Mandalay Pictures, Cathy Schulman added "In addition to our excitement at having Marty in the director's chair, we are thrilled to be in business with Universal, the Sinatra estate, Warner Music Group and the talented Phil Alden Robinson on this project about one of our greatest entertainers."

"It's an honor to be involved in this film which will celebrate the amazing life and work of Frank Sinatra," said President of Production for Universal Pictures, Donna Langley. "With Phil Alden Robinson writing the screenplay and Martin Scorsese at the helm, we know that this first feature motion picture adaptation of Sinatra's extraordinary life is in the best of hands."

"My father had great admiration for the talent of the people he chose to work with, and the talented people who worked with my father had great admiration for him," said Tina Sinatra. "It is personally pleasing to me that this paradigm continues with Marty Scorsese at the helm of the Sinatra film."
Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1915. Over the course of his career, he performed on more than 1,400 musical recordings, was awarded 31 gold records, received 10 Grammy Awards in addition to three special honors bestowed upon him by the Recording Industry Association of America. He appeared in 58 films winning three Oscars and two Golden Globe awards, in addition to a lifelong legacy of humanitarian work.

Al Pacino In Talks For 'Blink'

Al Pacino is in talks for the lead role in Stephen Gaghan's new movie Blink.

Gaghan is the Oscar-winning writer behind Traffic and directed Abandon and Syriana.

The project, which is set up at Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way company, is based on Malcolm Gladwell's book which examines the benefits and drawbacks of making snap decisions.

The story will center on Pacino's character and his twenty something son he was never close to. After the two reconnect, the boy, an idealistic drifter who's teaching in a downtown New York school, and the father, a finance type living in Connecticut, must navigate their new relationship.

The connection to the book is that the son has the Blink qualities that Gladwell discusses: He can size up people and situations on a dime. Recognizing this ability, his father wants to help the boy find himself while at the same time using him to make some dough on Wall Street.

Blink is expected to move forward once an actor has been found for the son role.
