The Walt Disney Company Acquires Lucasfilm: A New Star Wars Trilogy Set To Begin 2015

The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion and has announced that a 'Star Wars: Episode VII' feature film is targeted for a 2015 release, meaning 2015 will give us a 2015 will give us 'The Avengers 2,' a 'Justice League' and the beginning of a new Star Wars trilogy.

Also included are the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise as well as effects firm Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. Hopefully Howard the Duck can make an appearance in 'Avengers 2' too.

The Ofiical statement is below:
“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm.“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm’s legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world’s top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney’s strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.

The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney’s very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company’s unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application of innovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney’s portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company’s ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world’s highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.
The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

Their Can Only Be One Conan And Arnie Is King

Their was only ever one cinematic Conan the Barbarian and that was Arnold Schwarzenegger, after the failed 2011 reboot Arnie will once again reprise his role as the Cimmerian warrior in 'The Legend of Conan,' a new Robert E. Howard adaptation in the works from Universal Pictures.

The new film will ignore the  the events of the quite poor 'Conan the Destroyer' and instead focus on a older Conan as King with  producer Frederik Malmberg saying:
“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make,”
“It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”
Arnold had this to say about returning to the role:
“I always loved the Conan character and I’m honoured to be asked to step into the role once again," says Arnold
"I can’t wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story.”

James Mangold Talks 'The Wolverine'

Director James Mangold has revealed to empire that the 'The Wolverine' is not a prequel as many believed it would be, but the film actually takes places long after X-Men 3.  Could this potentially lead into 'X-Men: Days of Future Past?'
Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all," revealed Mangold.
"Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him."
He went on to reveal there will be prequel elements in the film saying:
"That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline," says Mangold. "I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it.
The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

'The Wolverine' stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee.  It opens July 26, 2013.

Updated: First Look At the New 'Evil Dead'

Unveiled at the NYCC is you're first look at the rebooted 'Evil Dead' with the first imaging showing off a deadite and the leaked trailer from NYCC screening showing off Fede Alvarezand's remake in action, and it  looks very promising.  Also below we have a interview with the chin himself Bruce Campbell reassuring fans that this will not be a pointless cash in remake and sadly confirming that his Ash will not be making a appearance in the reboot.

The reboot stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore and has a April 12, 2013 release date.

Update: Interview with Fede Alvarez directing the remake:
So you’re taking on this beloved franchise. What’s the tone you’re going with? Can folks expect something similar to the original Evil Dead?

It’s definitely something that comes out of the first one. Sam asked me, “Fede, would you remake Evil Dead for me?” And of course any filmmaker, when approached with that question, you freak out. So when somebody tells you that, they’re waiting for you to pitch them your version of the movie. So of course I said, “Sam, yeah, sure.” So I locked myself into a room with one of my best friends back home, my co-writer on the movie. We thought about what Evil Dead is for us. For me, it’s like, Evil Dead, I saw it when I was 12. And when you’re 12, you’re not supposed to be watching that! I remember it was the same feeling of the first time I discovered porn. Like, I’m not supposed to do this but I’m gonna do it anyway. And I remember, it was a very, very, very bad call. I shouldn’t have watched that movie – I was too young, I was traumatized by it. I was so, so scared – it was a super, super-violent, scary movie. So coming back to right now, when me and my friend were trying to figure it out, I was like, “That’s the kind of movie I want to do again!” I didn’t want to go and re-watch it to try and figure it out, I wanted to remember the key ideas – like, what stayed with me after all this time. That thing you never forget about the time you watched it for the first time. So we knew those things had to be in the new one. And basically what we pitched to him…it basically was like, “Let’s try to make the scariest movie ever!” And that’s exactly what he [Sam] wanted – he wanted to make a straightforward horror, scary, violent film.

Can you tell us anything about how gory it’s going to be?

It is gory, that’s for sure. Sam always says this: “There’s a fine line between horror and comedy.” You go too far, everybody starts laughing. You hit it in the right place, everybody’s scared to death. So we were always trying to stand on that line. So sometimes gore can be very funny. It’s not that kind of gory film. It has a lot of blood. I would come back home after every day of shooting covered in blood. People on set would have to cover themselves with plastic bags because there was so much splatter.

What kind of effects did you use to make all this gore happen?

We didn’t do any CGI, so there’s no CGI in the movie. Everything you’ll see is real. This was a very long shoot – 70 days of shooting. That’s the reason why everybody goes to CGI, because it’s cheaper, faster. But I hate that – most people hate that, particularly in a movie like this one. So we searched a lot of magic tricks and illusions, like with disappearing arms, all those kind of things. We really pushed the boundaries trying to create those illusions. There’s also a particularly bloody ending. The last scene is just – we wanted it to be the bloodiest scene ever. And I think it is!

How would 12-year-old you react to the film that you made now?

I couldn’t imagine! They used to pull a lot of horrible and violent things back in the ‘70s that today is like, oh, no! Like The Exorcist, with the crucifix and saying, “Fuck me, Jesus” – you would never get a rating, it would never be released. Evil Dead is part of that also. A girl gets raped by a tree. And even myself, when we wrote the first script, we didn’t write that scene. We were like, “No way! Who’s gonna let us get away with that?” And that’s the beauty of this film, because it’s Bruce [Campbell], Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert … it’s the three of them and myself working together on all the creative processes. This is not a classic remake controlled by a big studio – this is the same creatives from the original doing this film. And so we’re working together, and, like, I said, “I didn’t write that scene,” and Tapert’s like, “Where’s my raping scene?” And I was like, “Oh, okay!” And of course now it has to be way more terrible than the original. So, yeah, I couldn’t watch it if I was 12, because this is more graphic, in a way. But also it’s really psychological.

There are a lot of iconic shots in the original. Did you recreate any of those as a fan nod?

No, not really. Well, yes. Some. But there are a lot of hints to the original. And Sam noticed, and he’d be like, “Why don’t you put like this or that?” And I’d be like, “No, that’s your movie. I have my pride – I’m a director. I’m not going to go and recreate another director’s vision.” But there were some moments when I’d look in the monitor and it’d look like the original and I’d be miserable, I’d be like, “I have no soul!” And I didn’t put most of those things in the cut, and thank God Sam backed me up with most of those things.

Andy Serkis To Direct 'Animal Farm'

Andy Serkis is set to direct a big screen adaptation of the classic George Orwell  novel 'Animal Farm,' talking to THR described how he will bring the book to life:
I think we found a rather fresh way of looking at it. It is definitely using performance capture but we are using an amalgamation of filming styles to create the environmments.

We are in proof of concept stage at the moment, designing characters and experimenting on our stage with the designs. It is quite a wide canvas at the moment as to how much and how far we can take performance capture with quadrupeds and how much we will be using facial [capture]. We are not discounting the use of keyframe animation or puppeteering parts of animals. We are in an experimental phase; it’s terribly exciting.
The movie will be produced by The Imaginarium, a London-based performance-capture studio that Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish(Bridget Jones’s Diary, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) formed in 2011.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.

'Gangster Squad' Trailer #3

New trailer for Ruben Fleischer's 'Gangster Squad,' starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone and Sean Penn.

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and--if he has his way--every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control.

It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart. "Gangster Squad" is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD's efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

It opens 11 January 2013.
