Green Lantern Gets Green Lit

After DC's domination of the summer box office with the Dark Knight word comes from Firstshowing.net that the Green Lantern flick is finally scheduled to start shooting in Spring 2009. Donald De Line, who is developing the Green Lantern film, told the site that:

"a new draft of the script came in" and they're "gearing up to start shooting early spring."

There is still no word on a cast or director for the film but with the critical and financial success of The Dark Knight, DC and Warner's have a great opportunity to get some real talent involved in the film

Kirsten Dunst Is Back As Mary Jane

Kirsten Dunst has confirmed shes back in Spider-man 4 as the old web heads favorite gal Mary Jane Watson. Talking to MTV she confirmed that she will join Toby Maguire and Sam Rami to do the 4th and 5th instalments saying:

Branagh To Helm Thor?

Northern Ireland born Kenneth Branagh is in negotiations to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, reports Variety. The comic book adaptation is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release. Branagh who has directed a number of films most notably 'Much Ado About Nothing' and 'Hamlet'.

Thor is written by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Branagh is a fascinating choice to direct Thor and is the perfect director to steer the film the right way and add a bit of prestige and class to the project.

Ign recently sat down to have a good old chin wag with Michael Fassbender at the San Sebastian film festival about his role in Inglorious Bastards:

IGN: How was it meeting Tarantino for the first time?

Fassbender: It was amazing, fantastic. He's a film enthusiast. I love that you can mention any film to him, and he doesn't only know the f**king film, he'll quote sections of the film to you. I love that. I'm a film geek, too.

IGN: Tarantino loves Italian B-movies. Is this anything like the Enzo G. Castellari-directed 1978 Italian WWII movie Inglorious Bastards (Quel maledetto treno blindato)?

Fassbender: I haven't seen the original to be honest. I don't know, this plot is very much in a Quentin Tarantino-style. The dialogue; the rapid sort of response between characters.

IGN: Who do you play?

Fassbender: I play Hicox, Lt. Hicox, who is an English guy posing as a German soldier.

IGN: What happens to him?

Fassbender: I can't tell you that, Jesus Christ.

IGN: Tarantino is well-known for changing the script on set, are you prepared for the dialogue to change or to do some serious ad-libbing?

Fassbender: Look, I always think my job is to tell a story. The character within a script is to tell a story. I'm just going to make sure that my German is good because he might want to drift off the script, just like you said, so I have to make sure that I'm prepared enough on the German. I prepare in a very disciplined fashion, in terms of the script. I work on it, over and over again, until I'm sick of it, and then I work on it a couple of other times, so I just prepare for getting it on the page and then I relax.

IGN: Do you think that acting in a Tarantino film will be something that changes your career?

Fassbender: I just want to keep working and working with interesting people. He's definitely up there at the top of the list in terms of interesting directors, but I just want to keep on getting the chance to work and learn.

Matt Lucas & David Walliams Working On A Big Screen Venture

Matt Lucas and David Walliams are working on a Hollywood movie in which both will appear as multiple characters.

The Little Britain stars are working on a script with the Dreamworks studio – but the film has not yet been given the green light.

However, Lucas would not be drawn on too many details details.

‘We've got an idea that excites us that we hope will appeal to audiences in lots of different countries,’ he told BBC News.

‘The two of us will play five or six characters that will go around together, so it'll be technically very challenging. We looked at people like Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy and how they appear as lots of different characters

‘It's a story we created with a writer called Will Davies and he's written a script. The film has not been green-lit yet so it would be foolish to say the name of it.’

The movie will be produced by Ben Stiller's production company, Red Hour, which made the current box office hit, Tropic Thunder.

Spielberg To Make Chocky Before Tintin?

Steven Spielberg has picked up the film rights to John Wyndham's sci-fi novel Chocky according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The book revolves around a boy whose consciousness is taken over by an alien entity. The boy's father's suspicions are triggered when his son begins to argue with his imaginary friend.

Wyndham's best known book is The Day Of The Triffids, which became a feature film in 1962.

Spielberg hopes to make Chocky his next project, but may face delays as the movie was initially housed at studio Paramount, where his directing deal expired earlier in the year.

The helmer's animated Tintin trilogy hit problems last week when Universal declined to split the cost of the $130 million project with Paramount. The project is on hold for the time being while Spielberg hammers out a deal with the studio to foot the entire bill for Tintin.

Johnny Depp seems to be the Duke of the House Of Mouse these days as he has agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean flick, play Tonto in a big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger, both produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and he will star as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s version of Alice In Wonderland according to variety.

The roles come after Depp helped Disney earn a combined $2.6 billion at the box office with the three pics in the Pirates franchise, so hopefully they will do the right move and make Captain Jack the main character of the film and follow his exploits.

"Alice in Wonderland," scheduled for 2010, will be shot using 3-D and performance capture technology similar to that used for Beowulf.

Depp’s casting deals closed a busy Wednesday at the Kodak Theater, where Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook touted the Mouse’s upcoming slate of pics during a showcase event for exhibitors, media and other industry insiders.

According to the Hollywood Reporter Rachel McAdams has been cast in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, as the master sleuths love interest Irene Adler. Although she only appeared in one Sherlock Holmes story 'A Scandal in Bohemia' , she is one of the very few people to best the master detective and gain his respect so it shall be interesting to see how she is dealt with in the up coming film.

Joining her will be Robert Downey Jr. as the master detective, Jude Law as his faithful sidekick and biographer Dr Watson and Mark Strong as main villain, Blackwood. There is no talk yet if Holmes arch nemesis Professor James Moriarty will make an appearance, some have rumoured Russell Crowe is linked with the role.

Chris Morris Jihad Comedy Now Set To Be A Film

Chris Morris’s comedy about Islamic terrorists is to be released as a film, after both the BBC and Channel 4 rejected it for TV.

It is believed the broadcasters may have considered the subject matter too controversial to air. However, Channel 4’s movie arm, Film4, has now put up the money for the as-yet Untitled project.

The comedy centres on would-be suicide bombers from the North of England, and Morris once said he wanted to do for Islamic terrorism what Dad's Army did for the Nazis by showing them as ‘scary but also ridiculous’.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman told trade magazine Broadcast: ‘Channel 4 has a long history of working with Chris Morris, and a significant funding contribution towards his latest project is being made.

‘It was agreed at a very early stage that the project would work best as a film and from this point was developed through Film4.’

The film is being produced by Warp Films, the small independent studio which made its film debut with Morris' short My Wrongs #8245-8249 & 117 in 2002.

Shane Black has confirmed his next project in the director's chair will be Cold Warrior, based on a script by Chuck Mondry. The film revolves around a spy from the Cold War era who comes out of retirement to team with a younger agent from the new school to confront a domestic terrorism threat orchestrated by Russia.

Timur Bekmambetov Will Direct Moby Dick

Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted) will direct a big screen adaptation of the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick but not in the way that we know it. Instead of just basing it on the classic novel the writers are giving the story a graphic novel-style twist, Variety has the scoop:

Studio paid high six figures to Adam Cooper and Bill Collage to pen the screenplay.

The writers revere Melville’s original text, but their graphic novel-style version will change the structure. Gone is the first-person narration by the young seaman Ishmael, who observes how Ahab’s obsession with killing the great white whale overwhelms his good judgment as captain.

This change will allow them to depict the whale’s decimation of other ships prior to its encounter with Ahab’s Pequod, and Ahab will be depicted more as a charismatic leader than a brooding obsessive. "Our vision isn’t your grandfather’s ‘Moby Dick,’ " Cooper said. "This is an opportunity to take a timeless classic and capitalize on the advances in visual effects to tell what at its core is an action-adventure revenge story."

Wow, yep seems the people who wrote New York Minute and Accepted, think Moby Dick could be improved upon.

Davies Would Return For A Doctor Who Movie

Exiting Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies would consider returning to the franchise if a movie is announced.

Davies claimed that he thinks the BBC will get around to greenlighting the project "some day", although at the moment the corporation is at its "absolute limit".

"I'd be very interested in going back for it. I think it could be lovely and could work as an idea. They did one in the 1960s and that worked and it didn't affect the TV series at all," he said.

Jon Favreau & Vince Vaughn Off To Couples Retreat

Best mates and 'Swingers' and 'Made' stars Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn are to work together again on a new comedy called 'Couples Retreat'.

Variety says the story follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play but soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional.

Jon Favreau scripted the movie, Peter Billingsley will direct and Vince Vaughn will serve as one of the producers on the film.

Shooting begins in October.

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Land Tintin Roles

Steven Spielberg has asked Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to play Thomson and Thompson in the new Tintin trilogy.

Spielberg, who is co-directing the $130 million project with Peter Jackson, recently summoned the Hot Fuzz star to the films’ ‘motion-capture’ set which generates digital special effects to offer him the role.

‘Steven’s smoking a stogy, cap on head, like he’s always been since I was a baby,’ Pegg told the Sunday Times. ‘I shook his hand and chatted about films.

‘He gave me the mo-cap [motion-capture] camera, and I had a play around with it. Then he said, “Hey, maybe you and Nick Frost could play the Thompson Twins.”’

Thomson and Thompson – their names spelt differently – are the bungling, moustachioed, bowler-hatted detectives in Herge’s classic comic strips.

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson don't hear "no" very often.

But after they submitted a final budget of $130 million for their 3-D animated movie "Tintin," based on the Belgian comic strip, to Universal Pictures, the studio balked. The decision has left the two powerful filmmakers scrambling to find another financial partner.

When even Spielberg and "The Lord of the Rings" director Jackson, who have made some of the biggest blockbusters in history, can't get their movie made, you know something is up in Hollywood. Universal's refusal to finance "Tintin" underscores how in today's tough economic climate, bottom-line concerns trump once-inviolable relationships between studios and talent.

Until now, however, filmmakers of Spielberg's and Jackson's stature were thought to be immune to the brass-knuckles tactics of the studios. Squeezed by a business trapped between rising costs and leveling revenues, the two filmmakers are Hollywood's latest -- and most prominent -- victims of cost containment.

The particular problem for Universal with "Tintin" is that Spielberg's and Jackson's involvement comes with a huge price tag. The two filmmakers together would command such a large percentage of the movie's revenue as part of their compensation -- without putting up any of the capital themselves, as is typical in Hollywood -- that it takes a substantial slice of the profit off the table for the backers.


Paramount, which owns DreamWorks, where Spielberg has been developing "Tintin" for many years, had agreed to finance half the film but was hoping to have a financial partner in Universal. Paramount, a Viacom Inc. unit, has shouldered the vast majority of the more than $30 million spent on scripts, character design and initial animation and 3-D tests -- even before the movie had officially been given the green light for production. (Those costs are included in the $130-million budget.)

Spielberg has wanted to make "Tintin" since 1983, when he optioned the movie rights at his Universal-based production company, Amblin Entertainment. He has conceived the project as a trilogy, with the first film to be directed by him, the second by Jackson and no plans yet for the third.

Spielberg hoped that "Tintin" would be the next movie he would direct, with production to begin this month. The first two movies, using so-called motion-capture technology, were to be filmed back to back, similar to how Jackson made the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

But in a surprising move, when Spielberg and Jackson approached Universal, which has had a long-standing option to co-finance the picture, the studio decided that the deal made no financial sense. According to several people close to the project, "Tintin" would have to rake in $425 million worldwide in ticket sales before the studios could break even.

The reason: Spielberg and Jackson, who would also produce both movies, would together grab about 30% of the studio's total gross revenue from box-office, DVD, television and other sales. Under that scenario, the pair would walk away with more than $100 million before Universal and DreamWorks could make a profit.

Stephen Chow to Direct and Star in Green Hornet

Comingsoon have brilliant news, they just got the scoop that Stephen Chow will be both directing and starring in The Green Hornet.

Stephen Chow, one of Asia's most popular box-office draws as the award-winning star and director of such films as Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, will direct Seth Rogen and star opposite him as Kato in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet, set for release June 25, 2010, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce. Neal H. Moritz is the producer through his Original Film production company.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "When Seth, Evan, and Neal said they wanted Stephen Chow to be part of 'The Green Hornet,' it was a fantasy. Now that it's happening, it's almost too good to be true. Stephen's been a very important part of the Sony family for many years, so it's truly serendipitous for us to be moving forward with him directing the movie and starring as Kato."

Chow added, "I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started."

Moritz said, "'The Green Hornet' is a dream project and it's come together in a dream way. Seth will be fantastic in the lead role, and Stephen was the only name on the list for Kato. The material is a perfect match for his sensibilities -- Stephen in the director's chair is the best thing for the film."

Rogen said, "Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers."
